Due to the heavy rainy season in Cusco, which occurs yearly from December to March, landslides and mudflows impacted the beginnings of the Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain trails. According to archaeologist Nino del Solar, head of the park, Huayna Picchu saw about 15 meters of damage, and Machu Picchu Mountain about 8 meters.
The Ministry of Culture, responsible for the Machu Picchu Archaeological Park, responded swiftly and effectively to the recent landslide damage. Through dedicated technical efforts, they completed essential maintenance, ensuring the safety and accessibility of the trails. As a result, hikers can anticipate the reopening of Huayna Picchu on April 11th, and the grand return to Machu Picchu Mountain on April 26th.
