First and foremost, Happy New Year to all. We apologize for the lack of updates on our blog, as we have been busy securing permits for 2014 and embarking on some personal travels. As many of you are arranging your treks and visits to Machu Picchu, there is often curiosity surrounding the hike to Huayna Picchu and the reason behind the two different prices for this excursion.
To address the initial query, can you hike Huayna Picchu? Absolutely, yes! While access to Huayna Picchu is limited to 400 hikers daily, with early planning and booking at least two months in advance, we can secure your permit for this additional trek.Permits are allocated for specific time slots, either from 7-8 AM or 10-11 AM, which is the designated start time for the hike.
The ascent typically takes around 45 minutes to reach the summit, allowing time for photos, followed by a similar duration for the descent. For our travelers, we procure permits for the 10-11 AM time slot, enabling you to first enjoy your guided tour of Machu Picchu.
Once your exploration of the ruins concludes, your guide will direct you to the starting point of the Huayna Picchu hike. While this hike is usually self-guided, if you prefer your guide to accompany you, kindly inform our office in advance for necessary arrangements.
Should you wish to obtain a permit for Huayna Picchu, the cost is $25 per person for the hike, unless you are participating in one of our Inca Trail treks. For Inca Trail trekkers, regardless of the trek duration chosen, the fee to climb Huayna Picchu is $75 per person.
The variance in cost for Inca Trail trekkers is due to the permit for the Inca Trail already including entry to Machu Picchu, eliminating the need for a separate physical ticket to access the site when climbing Huayna Picchu. This requirement is stipulated by the Park office and not by Alpaca. When considering this additional hike, bear in mind that it is physically demanding and features steep terrain.
While the panoramic views are exceptional, akin to those from the Sun Gate which is freely accessible, the area can become crowded.
However, embarking on this hike promises unforgettable views that may become a cherished profile photo on social media.
